National Vascular Access Improvement Initiative (NVAII)

The NVAII is coming. This initiative is being launched to improve vascular access for dialysis patients, with the specific goal of increasing AV fistula use.

The Institute of Healthcare Improvement was asked by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to assist in developing the NVAII. Starting in January 2003, a team worked with representatives from CMS and the ESRD Networks along with clinicians, dialysis providers, patients, and others to understand the issues, develop high-impact change ideas, and propose a structure and strategy for implementing the intended improvements.

ESRD Network 13 will be participating in this initiative. Initiative discussions will be occurring in early June and the project will start shortly thereafter. Please visit our Web site routinely for future information and educational offerings.
